I think Reluctant Android is a good flagship for Psi-Fi Books because it gets right down to the core question of psychological sci-fi: What’s the difference between artificial intelligence and natural human intelligence?
The book takes the android’s point of view. Andy Bolton, an engineer in Seattle, thinks he is just an ordinary guy but gradually learns that he is actually a robot. By taking the android’s point of view, I can ask, why is he not a person? What is he lacking? Or from the opposite point of view: Is human consciousness really computational?
Reluctant Android is also just a good adventure story. Andy’s “life” is threatened by evil engineers who want to take him apart to see how he works. There are wild chases, tense conversations, and even a murder. He finds his creator in Honolulu and asks, “What am I?” In the end… well, I won’t reveal that.
