AFTER

After preparing my cover for Reluctant Android, I showed it to some friends.

They liked it, but one person said, “Hmm. It looks like he’s part of the Blue Man Group. He has a blue, bald head and looks like he might be performing some wacky stunt.

“Really?” I said. “Is Blue Man Group still a thing?”

“I think it is.”

So I checked and sure enough, the Blue Man Group, a troupe of performance artists founded in the 1980’s, is still going strong. Recently, their company was purchased by Cirque de Soleil. BMG is not my preferred form of live entertainment so I had no idea. I did notice that BMG performers have no ears, or at least, just ear buds. It looks like they wear a transparent sock over their heads. Reluctant Android, on the other ear, has the full appendages. I pointed that out to my friend.

“That’s not a strong distinction. The image of the Reluctant Android still reminds me of BMG.”

Well, I didn’t want that. So I took the image into a photo processing program and changed the colors so he wasn’t blue anymore. It still looked good, and no longer had that clang! association.

And that’s the story of how the Reluctant Android quite the Blue Man Group.
